Microsoft aims to invest $1.7 billion in a groundbreaking collaboration with Vaulted Deep, a biotechnology firm, to transform organic waste, including human and animal feces, into 'bio-sludge'. This bio-sludge will be injected 1,500 meters underground for sequestration, with the ultimate goal of mitigating carbon emissions. This strategic move is designed to address the substantial energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with Microsoft's AI operations. By partnering with Vaulted Deep, Microsoft intends to leverage carbon credit mechanisms to secure tax benefits and bolster its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) rating in the capital markets. Nonetheless, environmental watchdog Carbon Market Watch has raised concerns, contending that this approach does not fundamentally address the issue of carbon emissions reduction.
