Sasha Levin, a seasoned Linux developer and NVIDIA employee (formerly with Google and Microsoft), in collaboration with a co-maintainer of the Linux LTS kernel, has recently introduced a configuration schema and documentation guidelines tailored for AI programming assistants within the Linux kernel ecosystem. This initiative seeks to offer developers a roadmap for leveraging AI-powered coding tools to collaboratively craft patches and contribute to the Linux kernel. Levin has unveiled a preliminary set of rules that encompasses AI attribution requirements and other pertinent details, ensuring that the integration of AI in kernel development adheres to established norms. The proposed framework comprises two key components: the first introduces a unified configuration file for diverse AI coding assistants, fostering consistency across tools; the second presents practical rules and documentation to steer AI assistants in adhering to Linux kernel development practices.
