MIT has unveiled a comprehensive 216-page research report delving into the question of whether the utilization of ChatGPT results in the accumulation of cognitive debt, a topic that has ignited widespread debate. The report cautions that excessive reliance on AI tools such as ChatGPT could potentially undermine cognitive abilities. Some media outlets have further escalated the issue with alarming headlines, such as 'ChatGPT Causes 47% Brain Shrinkage,' fostering anxiety among numerous AI users. The study employed electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor the brain activity of volunteers while they engaged in writing tasks with ChatGPT. The findings revealed that students who utilized AI tools exhibited a reduction in the number of neural connections within their brains, along with a decline in memory function. Researchers have coined this observed phenomenon as 'cognitive debt'.
