Apple is in discussions with Anthropic and OpenAI about integrating their AI technologies into Siri, signaling a pivotal strategic transformation. Presently, Siri's AI capabilities are largely underpinned by Apple's proprietary 'Apple Foundation Model,' with an anticipated new version in 2026. However, the consideration of third-party technology underscores Apple's acknowledgment of its limitations in the generative AI landscape. Following a thorough evaluation, Siri's lead, Mike Rockwell, believes that Anthropic's technology offers the greatest potential. While Apple remains steadfast in its commitment to in-house AI development and intends to make significant investments in its self-developed cloud model, senior leadership has recognized that leveraging external technology in the near term could serve as a catalyst to overcome current impediments. Furthermore, Apple is also exploring the possibility of acquiring the AI search company Perplexity and has been in communication with the AI startup Thinking Machines Lab.
