On Tuesday, the head of Australia's eSafety Commission recommended that Google's streaming platform, YouTube, be encompassed within the scope of the proposed social media ban for teenagers. This ban, originally scheduled to take effect in December of this year, aims to prohibit individuals under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. However, Google has voiced its opposition to this measure, arguing that its streaming service does not fall under the category of social media. The Commission's head emphasized that YouTube is frequently cited as one of the primary "sources of harmful content" among teenagers and expressed suspicion that Google may have eased its content moderation standards. Under Australian law, social media platforms that fail to comply with such regulations face potential fines of up to AUD 50 million.
