Google AI Studio, an AI testing platform designed by Google exclusively for developers, facilitates model fine-tuning and minimizes usage constraints. Historically, developers have enjoyed unrestricted access to hosted models, including through API integration. Nonetheless, as of May, Google AI Studio has ceased offering the Gemini 2.5 Pro series of models to free-tier users.
Google has clarified that the platform is undergoing a transition to an API key-based system, necessitating users to furnish their own APIs. Importantly, Google underscores that the free tier of AI Studio will remain intact in the near future and hints at the potential restoration of free access to Gemini 2.5 Pro in the future. However, the specific modalities, such as usage quotas or incentive programs, are still under active consideration.
For the time being, users can only avail themselves of a free trial of the Gemini 2.0 series models. Attempts to access the 2.5 series will result in an error message, indicating that this series is not supported within the free tier.
