On June 4, local time, Varun Mohan, CEO of Windsurf, voiced his frustration on social media after Anthropic abruptly terminated direct access to nearly all Claude 3.x models, including Claude 3.5 Sonnet, 3.7 Sonnet, and 3.7 Sonnet Thinking, with less than five days' notice. Mohan noted that this sudden move compelled Windsurf to swiftly pivot to alternative inference service providers and cautioned users about potential service disruptions during this transitional phase.

Despite having access to Claude 3.x models through third-party channels, Windsurf is currently unable to meet the full demand for all existing Claude 3.x models due to the brevity of the notice. To mitigate this challenge, Windsurf plans to promote the Gemini 2.5 Pro model as an alternative while restricting direct access to Claude 3.x models for users on the Free plan. Additionally, the company will reintroduce access to some models through a Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) methodology.

Mohan emphasized that Windsurf remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering the highest quality products and is prepared to invest to maintain full access to Anthropic models. Despite these efforts, developers have continued to unsubscribe from Windsurf's services.
