Using the H2-2 quantum computer, researchers from Quantinuum have achieved a groundbreaking feat: they have successfully distinguished various types of knots based on their topological properties, potentially outstripping classical computational capabilities. By employing a quantum algorithm, they computed the Jones polynomial, which is a mathematical tool that encapsulates the topological characteristics of knots. The H2-2 has already tackled knots with 600 crossings, and future iterations of the device are projected to handle approximately 3,000 crossings, surpassing the capabilities of classical supercomputers. Furthermore, this technology holds promise not only for validating the performance of quantum computers but also for extending quantum computing applications to other intricate topological problems.
