In an effort to mitigate brain drain, Google's DeepMind division has introduced non-compete clauses for certain UK-based employees. These agreements stipulate that affected staff members must refrain from joining competitor companies for a year after departing DeepMind and will continue to receive their salaries during this period. This measure has sparked discontent among some researchers who perceive it as marginalizing. While most non-compete agreements are prohibited in the United States, DeepMind's London headquarters remains unaffected by such regulations. Notably, Microsoft's Vice President of AI disclosed that several DeepMind employees have sought assistance due to the constraints imposed by these non-compete clauses. Google has responded by stating that the agreement is only employed on a "selective" basis.
