Following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Dingri County, Xigaze City, Tibet, images and videos of children supposedly buried in ruins that circulated online were suspected to be synthetically created using AI technology. Tibetan authorities have clarified that certain self-media platforms misused old images and AI technology to disseminate false information. Upon verification, these images were traced back to a short video themed around war, posted by an AI account, and had no connection to the earthquake. Several other images labeled as depicting the earthquake scene were also confirmed to be collages of outdated images. Lawyers emphasized that the production and dissemination of false information is illegal and may result in legal repercussions. This incident serves as a stark reminder to the public to remain vigilant against online rumors in the information age and to collaborate in preserving a healthy online environment.
