During the 38th NeurIPS conference in 2024, Rosalind Picard, a professor from the MIT Media Lab, revealed that a student had been expelled from MIT for committing academic fraud utilizing ChatGPT, a revelation that swiftly garnered significant online attention. Subsequently, netizens identified the student as Mr. Yan, an alumnus of Zhejiang University, and presented evidence of his academic misconduct. Mr. Yan acknowledged using ChatGPT to refine and alter user interview content for a 2023 assignment, leading to a presentation that deviated from the original data. He appealed to the public not to tarnish the reputation of his alma mater, Zhejiang University, or his current institution, MIT.
Notably, Mr. Yan had previously been honored with Zhejiang University's prestigious "Zhu Kezhen Scholarship." Amidst the ensuing public outcry, Professor Picard issued an apology, recognizing that mentioning the student's nationality was unnecessary and did not contribute to the discussion.
