On November 5, OpenAI unveiled Images 2.6, its next-generation image generation model, and introduced a native GIF animation generation feature to ChatGPT. Users can now create animated GIFs simply by entering text descriptions or uploading photos, and can adjust playback speed, edit individual frames, and share their creations—all within ChatGPT. Previously, ChatGPT could assist in creating GIFs through methods such as writing code, but it could not complete the process in a single step via native image generation. This update enables users to generate and edit GIFs solely through natural language interaction, no animation production skills required. In addition, Images 2.6 boosts ChatGPT's image generation speed. For developers, OpenAI has simultaneously launched two API models—GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst—focusing respectively on faster generation speed and higher image quality to meet the needs of different application scenarios. Images 2.6 is rolling out globally starting today, and all ChatGPT and Codex subscribers can access it on desktop, mobile, and web.
