Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the "godfather of AI," has once again sounded the alarm on AI risks. He warns that unless effective measures are taken, hackers could use AI to attack power generation and financial systems within the next year or two, causing large-scale paralysis—or even triggering severe AI-related incidents comparable to the Chernobyl disaster, forcing all sectors to take the risks seriously. He is no AI doomsayer: he still believes AI can bring a better future and remains optimistic about its value in boosting productivity and improving life, especially in the medical field. However, he criticized some heads of leading AI companies for blindly iterating ever more powerful models in pursuit of profit, and said he does not trust OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others at all. Hinton suggested that whether humanity can keep AI risks under control will become clear within the next decade; if control is mishandled, problems such as a widening wealth gap, large-scale unemployment, and social fragmentation may emerge. He supports more AI safety research and the implementation of arrangements such as universal basic income to cope with related shocks. He also calls for establishing a strict AI regulatory system, mandatory testing and independent evaluation of frontier models, and building common standards among governments. He said he will use his reputation to promote work related to AI risk prevention and control.
