South Korean research shows that in 2023, Chinese AI models were virtually unused in South Korea; yet from January to August 2026, nearly half of South Korea's newly added AI models were built on Chinese AI foundation models. This trend is continuing to intensify, with the proportion expected to reach 70%–90% by 2027. Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen (Qwen) holds a dominant position thanks to advantages such as full-size parameter coverage, multilingual support, the permissive Apache 2.0 open-source license, comprehensive supporting tools, and costs far lower than comparable US models. South Korea's domestic AI models, meanwhile, face challenges such as numerous restrictions on commercial use and insufficient independent R&D capabilities. Globally, Chinese open-weight AI models already account for nearly 40% of download share on the Hugging Face platform, and the number of derivative models far exceeds that of comparable US models. A large number of overseas enterprises have chosen Chinese AI models as their foundation, creating a significant ecosystem advantage. At present, some of the extra-large models from China's leading laboratories have gradually introduced non-commercial clauses and revenue-sharing requirements to ensure the healthy operation of enterprises.
