Developing an operating system kernel typically requires an experienced engineering team and years of effort. However, Gregory Kurtzer, co-founder of CentOS and founder of Rocky Linux, recently showcased a remarkable feat: using AI agents to build a brand-new operating system kernel, Ginux, in just 11 days. The kernel contains no Linux kernel code and is already capable of booting Rocky Linux 10. Although it remains a research prototype at this stage, it demonstrates new possibilities for AI involvement in complex low-level software development.
