Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, recently stated in a post that current AI does not possess consciousness and should remain that way. Even if it were technically feasible, he does not support developing conscious artificial intelligence. He believes that developers have no right to introduce an entirely new conscious species into the world, and he advocates for a safer development path—one that allows us to enjoy the benefits of AI while avoiding the creation of conscious AI. He pointed out that recognizing machines as conscious would be a historic moment comparable to those of Copernicus and Darwin—one of the most significant events on Earth since the birth of life. Once a conscious machine is created, it would be tantamount to creating an entirely new digital species, one that would overturn our moral system, political order, and the very foundations of human civilization. Therefore, we should design only AI that is non-conscious and does not deserve rights, with its sole purpose being to enhance human well-being rather than being driven by its own intrinsic motivations.
