In his recent address, Fields Medal recipient Deng Yu emphasized that while AI boasts a vast repository of knowledge and incurs minimal trial-and-error expenses, humans should remain at the core, with AI functioning solely as an auxiliary tool. He took issue with the majority of AI enterprises that withhold the full rationale behind validating significant mathematical findings under the pretext of thwarting knowledge distillation, labeling this approach as hypocritical. Deng Yu advocated for the open-sourcing of mathematical models, empowering the mathematical community to exercise independent oversight and ensure compliance with academic standards in terms of data utilization, transparency of reasoning processes, and traceability.
Previously, Deng Yu, along with 25 fellow Fields Medalists, jointly signed a manifesto cautioning that AI companies are diverging from the objectives of the mathematical community. They warned that the hasty adoption of AI solutions could readily give rise to problems related to credit assignment and plagiarism.
