On October 12, several tech industry executives cautioned on Monday that the world may be overly optimistic about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), overlooking its current immaturity. They pointed out that cybersecurity is a more pressing concern in the short term compared to the potential threats posed by the rapid advancement of AI. During an event in Singapore, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew stated that humans still hold an edge over AI in many creative fields, particularly in nuanced visual recognition and long-term memory retrieval. Meanwhile, Microsoft executive Judson Althoff echoed similar sentiments at another event, calling for a more cautious approach to AI. He emphasized the need to distinguish between hype and reality, noting that there is no clear path for boundless cognitive computing power to ultimately replace human goals and values. Chew also stressed that companies need to gain a deeper understanding of the cybersecurity risks associated with AI, as these risks are very real and cannot be ignored in the short term amid the race among companies to adopt AI technologies.
