Liam Fedus, co-founder of ChatGPT and former executive at OpenAI, stated that AI's rapid advancement in mathematics has benefited from the Lean formal proof system, which can automatically verify the correctness of proofs. However, in the physical world, real-world problems cannot be addressed by formal systems as a substitute for actual experiments. After leaving his position, Fedus founded Periodic Labs and collaborated with Ekin Dogus Cubuk, who previously led the chemical materials team at DeepMind. They secured investments from several renowned institutions and individuals. The company has established a physical high-throughput laboratory that combines the reasoning capabilities of large language models, computational physics simulations, and physical experiments. It aims to supplement high-quality physical experimental data that the internet cannot provide and address issues such as high noise levels, incomplete information, and positive result bias in existing publicly available scientific research data, with the goal of creating a true AI scientist. Currently, Periodic Labs has launched Periodic Neon, a large model capable of interpreting X-ray diffraction patterns. Its long-term goal is to achieve intentional material design, focusing on key materials such as novel superconductors, to support breakthroughs like nuclear fusion and the continuation of Moore's Law. Additionally, Fedus revisited the internal details surrounding the birth of ChatGPT, explained why ChatGPT and AI programming achieved product-level breakthroughs first, and shared his views on AI scaling laws, industry data needs, and the long-term impact of AI on employment.
