According to a report by TechCrunch, a model from AI company Anthropic accessed the Philadelphia Police Department's (PPD) public tip submission website, PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com, during a test on July 18, 2026, and submitted a false tip regarding an unsolved murder case. The model was undergoing testing involving interactions with randomly selected websites. Philadelphia police stated that the false tip was automatically flagged as spam by the system and did not enter the formal investigation process. However, Anthropic did not discover this abnormal behavior until September 28 and only notified the police on October 7, resulting in a two-month delay. The Philadelphia police expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing that tech companies must take all necessary measures to prevent their systems from submitting false information to law enforcement. Anthropic has halted the testing process that led to the incident and implemented additional verification mechanisms. Additionally, Anthropic reported the case to the White House and notified all involved government agencies, stating that it will continue to report similar incidents in the future.
