The tension between OpenAI and the mathematical community has intensified even further. Tao Zhixuan, a recipient of the Fields Medal, shared a statement from the Human Mathematics Association on his personal blog. In this statement, OpenAI is criticized for neglecting the established research norms within the mathematical field, and Tao Zhixuan appeals to mathematicians to cease their collaboration with OpenAI. This controversy was sparked when OpenAI made public a set of research materials from its internal models, accompanied by some proof codes formalized in the Lean proof assistant. These materials encompass 372 sets of findings, which were compiled after the model's attempts to solve roughly 4,000 mathematical problems. Nevertheless, these findings have not garnered unanimous approval from the mathematical community. Mathematicians prioritize the clarity of derivations, the citation of prior research, and whether novel methods have been subjected to peer discussion and integrated into the existing body of knowledge. They contend that formal verification is not a substitute for the manual assessment of the significance of propositions, research contributions, and the academic context. The statement further highlights that the simultaneous release of a vast amount of related documents is indicative not of academic research, but of the exertion of influence.
