During the Huawei Full Connect Conference, Huawei revealed details from media interviews with Xu Zhijun, its rotating chairman, and Liao Heng, the chief scientist at HiSilicon. When queried about the recent appeal from prominent US AI model providers to decelerate AI advancements, Xu Zhijun emphasized the importance of recognizing the disparities in AI development between China and the US. He noted that a majority of Chinese AI models are open-source, making their progress relatively transparent. In contrast, leading US model developers wield greater computational power, and the intricacies of their models might remain known only to them. The Chinese market exhibits a relatively low awareness of AI risks, necessitating that domestic model developers expedite their progress until they can fully comprehend the risks associated with AI development. Only then might they resonate with the sentiments of leading US AI providers. Concurrently, it is crucial to maintain a balance between fostering AI development and managing associated risks to ensure the constructive evolution of AI technology. Earlier, in September, leaders from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI advocated for coordinated regulation and a more measured approach to the development of advanced AI models. Nevertheless, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang contested this perspective, asserting that the AI industry does not require new laws or regulations for safety, that safety and speed can harmoniously coexist, and highlighting that China's approach to AI is more pragmatic, with fewer discussions revolving around apocalyptic AI scenarios.
