Meta's newly launched AI agent, Muse, is posing significant competitive pressure on online travel platforms. Truist points out that, unlike previous large language models, Muse not only has travel planning capabilities but can also directly complete bookings, posing a substantial threat to online travel agencies such as Expedia and Booking. Through natural language instructions, Muse can automatically complete tasks such as price comparison, product selection, and order placement, highly simplifying the travel booking process, weakening OTAs' information asymmetry advantage, and potentially squeezing their platform commissions. Expedia has swiftly integrated with Muse, becoming its underlying hotel fulfillment service provider, while Booking faces greater impact as its core profits rely on standardized hotel inventory, which is easily bypassed by AI agents. In contrast, Airbnb has a deeper moat as its core supply consists of exclusive non-standardized homestays, making it difficult for AI agents to bypass its platform.
