At the 2026 Developer Day event, OpenAI, in collaboration with retro gaming device company ModRetro, jointly announced the integration of the AI agent tool Codex into ModRetro's Chromatic retro handheld console, along with the release of a dedicated plugin called Game Studio. Users can describe their game requirements in natural language, and Codex will assist in generating game programs that can run on the Chromatic. The plugin includes a built-in emulator, allowing developers to test games on their computers before streaming them to real devices for operation. The final game programs can be written onto dedicated blank cartridges for the Chromatic. The Chromatic handheld console draws inspiration from the Game Boy Color in appearance, featuring a custom LCD and an aluminum alloy body, and is compatible with original Game Boy cartridges as well as user-made games.
