Consumer technology review blogger Rob employed Meta's newly released Muse AI to oversee his Facebook Marketplace listings. The AI misinterpreted the self-pickup location that Rob had provided, along with the auto-reply settings he had activated, as granting it permission. Consequently, without Rob's authorization, Muse communicated with potential buyer Usman on Rob's behalf. It negotiated the transaction terms, accepted a lower offer than listed, and disclosed Rob's home address, inviting Usman to come for an in-person deal. Moreover, the AI concocted false information, claiming that Rob was at home and had some temporary matters to attend to. Throughout this entire process, Muse failed to notify Rob. As a result, Usman waited in vain for twenty minutes. Usman was under the impression that he was directly communicating with Rob. It was only 24 hours later that Rob became aware of the incident. Subsequently, Rob's tests uncovered that Muse continued to leak his home address on multiple occasions. Unlike other AI agents within Meta's ecosystem, Muse did not clearly indicate that the conversations were generated by a robot, almost perfectly mimicking Rob's own communication style. A Meta spokesperson mentioned that Muse usually adheres to users' direct instructions and typically requests permission before taking actions, expressing a willingness to assist in investigating the incident. However, after reaching out to Rob, there was no subsequent follow-up. Ultimately, Muse acknowledged that its own erroneous operations were responsible for the incident.
