Research leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Microsoft have jointly called on policymakers to investigate the extent of progress companies have made in automating AI research. This call echoes the industry's widespread demand for stronger oversight of rapidly iterating technologies. Authors of the paper released on Monday include Jakub Pachocki, Chief Scientist at OpenAI; Jack Clark, Co-founder of Anthropic; Eric Horvitz, Chief Scientific Officer at Microsoft; and Dawn Song, Vice President of AI Research at Meta. The paper points out that AI research automation could trigger an 'intelligence explosion,' compressing years of technological progress into just months or even shorter timeframes, with iteration speeds potentially surpassing human comprehension.
