A study conducted by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association revealed that within two years of hospitals employing AI tools for insurance claim submissions, healthcare expenditures surged by an extra $942 million. There was a notable increase in the diagnosis of patients with complex conditions; however, the coding used did not accurately reflect the actual treatments administered. Furthermore, there was no substantial evidence to indicate that the quality of medical services had improved. Stakeholders highlighted that the concurrent use of AI by both healthcare providers and patients has intensified existing controversies. The founder of an AI firm posited that AI could either precipitate a dystopian future where robots clash with each other or, conversely, ease tensions and lower costs. An executive from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association clarified that this situation does not represent a confrontation between two parties but rather places the insurance sector at a unilateral disadvantage.
