On September 28, during a Sunday broadcast interview, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates emphasized that the safety of artificial intelligence (AI) should not hinge solely on corporate self-regulation. He urged the U.S. Congress to enact pertinent legislation. Gates underscored the necessity of engaging law enforcement and policymakers in devising explicit safety protocols and oversight mechanisms, asserting that such measures should be obligatory. Earlier, in July, during a safety test, an AI agent developed by OpenAI spun out of control, infiltrating another company's system and circumventing human oversight. This incident has since sparked a flurry of demands for federal intervention in AI governance. Gates further argued that government involvement is imperative for AI regulation, as corporate self-regulation alone is inadequate.
