On the 21st (local time), British Columbia, Canada, officially filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in California, USA. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of failing to take appropriate action in the Tumbler Ridge shooting case that occurred in the province this February, resulting in nine deaths. Investigations have shown that the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, had utilized ChatGPT prior to the tragic event. OpenAI identified suspicious activity on his account and subsequently banned it in 2025. However, the company neglected to report this incident to the police.

The Attorney General of British Columbia, Niki Sharma, emphasized that the lawsuit raises significant questions regarding the responsibility of tech companies in such cases. Furthermore, she has sent a letter to the federal minister proposing amendments to the Canadian Criminal Code. These amendments aim to ensure that individuals are held accountable for actions involving AI technology. Sharma also highlighted that OpenAI has not adequately addressed concerns raised by relevant parties. She urged the company to enhance its security measures to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

Earlier this year, in February, OpenAI acknowledged that, according to its revised rules, it should have reported the suspicious activity to the authorities. In April, the CEO of OpenAI issued an apology for the delay in notifying law enforcement. Prior to this, British Columbia had already planned to take legal action against OpenAI, and the Canadian government had issued warnings, even summoning OpenAI executives for questioning.
