On the evening of September 21, the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with a number of organizations within the global AI community, unveiled a shared pledge designed to bridge the substantial accessibility divide in the realm of artificial intelligence. The objective is to empower individuals across the globe to utilize AI services securely and efficiently in the languages they converse in daily. Among the initial signatories are 60 organizations, including prominent names such as OpenAI, Authopic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and NVIDIA. Bill Gates, the Chairman of the Gates Foundation, underscored the significance of making AI tools accessible to all and providing support for the languages people actually use. Presently, of the roughly 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, merely a handful possess adequate data and resources to bolster artificial intelligence. Numerous users of so-called 'low-resource languages' encounter challenges like low accuracy and limited practicality when engaging with AI systems. This pledge is anticipated to facilitate easier access to information and services powered by artificial intelligence for billions of people, thereby benefiting various sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, financial services, and public services.
