The lawsuit contends that OpenAI had the capability to alert the authorities by examining ChatGPT logs, potentially averting a mass shooting that took place earlier in the year. In June 2025, OpenAI took action by banning the account linked to the shooter, Jesse Van Rooijelaar. However, it did not promptly inform law enforcement agencies of this development. The tragic events unfolded in February 2026, when the 18-year-old woman first murdered her mother and younger brother at their residence. Subsequently, she proceeded to a secondary school, where she fatally shot five minors and one teacher before taking her own life. British Columbia is now seeking to hold OpenAI and its management responsible for their alleged negligence. Should the lawsuit prove successful, the compensation awarded will be earmarked for the reconstruction of the affected local community, including the establishment of a new school to replace the one devastated by the shooting.
