In a recent move, the U.S. state of California has enacted a new law aimed at bolstering the transparency requirements surrounding political advertising conducted by social media influencers. According to the provisions of this new legislation, if influencers or online content creators receive compensation for posting political content and neglect to disclose the advertising nature or the payment arrangement as mandated, regulatory bodies are empowered to levy a fine of up to $5,000 for each instance of non-compliance. Furthermore, the individuals implicated may be reported to law enforcement agencies and potentially face misdemeanor charges.
