There has been a noticeable shift in the stance of tech industry leaders who were once fervent advocates of AI. Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify, chastised his employees for submitting AI-generated content without review, branding it as “garbage grenaades.” Similarly, Luis von Ahn, CEO of Duolingo, backtracked on his earlier bold statements, acknowledging that large-scale AI deployments often result in subpar content that pales in comparison to the creativity of human employees. Researchers have coined a term for such AI-generated outputs—“work garbage”—which appear polished on the surface but are, in reality, of little value and necessitate extensive rework.

Surveys indicate that over half of full-time office workers in the United States have, at some point, dispatched such content. Moreover, the more organizations promote the use of AI, the more widespread this issue becomes. Nearly 40% of respondents reported having received such content, with the average monthly time spent on rework escalating to 3.4 hours this year. This trend not only strains colleague relationships but also incurs significant productivity cost losses.
