On September 19, Claude Code unveiled version 2.1.277, introducing extended support for AGENTS.md files. In scenarios where a CLAUDE.md file is absent from the folder, Claude will now automatically search for and utilize AGENTS.md instead. Users have the flexibility to enable or disable this feature through the /config settings. Notably, CLAUDE.md serves as Claude's dedicated configuration file, whereas AGENTS.md functions as a project-level foundational rule document applicable across diverse AI systems. Leveraging AGENTS.md can significantly streamline workflows by minimizing the need for frequent tool switching and configuration adjustments. It ensures that projects adhere to a standardized AI instruction manual, thereby eliminating the necessity for reconfiguration when transitioning between tools, taking on new projects, or engaging in open-source collaborations.
