On September 18, sources familiar with the matter revealed that SoftBank Group has increased its margin loan secured by shares in its chip subsidiary Arm by $5 billion, bringing the total to $25 billion, with the aim of raising funds for its expanding AI investments. This month, the Japanese investment company renegotiated and signed relevant agreements with creditors. This marks the third time SoftBank has expanded the scale of such loans to meet founder Masayoshi Son's massive investment needs in the AI sector, including a nearly $65 billion investment commitment to ChatGPT developer OpenAI. Son's ambitions do not stop there; he also plans to aggressively expand data centers in the United States and France. Among them, SoftBank's U.S. subsidiary SB Energy is developing 8.8 gigawatts of data center capacity in the U.S., expected to require $174 billion in capital expenditure. Additionally, SoftBank has announced plans to build a 5-gigawatt data center in France.
