Genentech has exercised its rights for the first validated target milestone in its collaboration with Recursion, triggering a $3 million payment. Since their partnership began in 2021, Recursion has accumulated $216 million in cash. This reflects a shift in decision-making power within the biopharmaceutical sector, where AI-native Biotech companies are now participating in target selection decisions, breaking the previous monopoly held by multinational pharmaceutical companies' (MNCs) R&D teams. Traditionally, R&D decision-making was controlled by a few individuals, but now AI is beginning to participate in the decision-making process. For example, Sanofi's AI agent, Plai, has participated in governance meetings and holds a decision-making seat. Under efficiency pressures, decision-making power is gradually being ceded to AI, with the decision-making sequence now involving models assigning weights first, followed by final human approval. The collaborative boundaries between AI and human decision-makers are gradually becoming clear: efficiency-related tasks are handled by AI, while value judgments are made by humans; data integration is completed by AI, but trust-building relies on humans; execution is carried out by AI, but responsibility ultimately rests with humans. The pharmaceutical industry is transitioning from experience-driven to evidence- and algorithm-driven decision-making, with the industry's decision-making power being restructured. Teams that clarify the collaborative boundaries between humans and AI will gain a competitive edge.
