In September 2026, U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin and Rick Scott jointly sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission, requesting an investigation into how Amazon and Walmart's AI shopping chatbots handle information related to 'Made in USA' products. The letter pointed out that these chatbots might conceal or suppress two types of information: which products are made domestically in the U.S., and which products falsely claim to be made in the U.S. Citing a report from Columbia University's Center for Law and Economic Studies, the senators stated that Amazon's Alexa and Walmart's Sparky avoid providing information about U.S. origins while readily offering details about products made in other countries. Amazon responded by stating that origin information is displayed on product detail pages whenever available and that it continuously optimizes its AI shopping features. Walmart declined to comment.
