During the week of September 7th, OpenAI’s user token consumption on the OpenRouter platform overtook Anthropic’s for the first time, bringing an end to Anthropic’s leading position, which had lasted for more than 30 months. This milestone was achieved thanks to the combined performance of four models: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-5.6 Luna, GPT-5.6 Sol, and Terra. Notably, Astra was a standout performer, accounting for 19% of the total spending by OpenAI and Anthropic combined, topping the weekly spending chart. Luna, on the other hand, gained traction due to its cost-efficiency, and together, the four models catered to developers at various levels. Recently, it was revealed that GPT-6 Sol’s inference speed is notably faster than Astra’s, and it outperformed Anthropic’s Opus 5.2 in daily engineering tasks, directly challenging Claude’s previously dominant edge in balancing speed and quality. OpenAI executives have hinted at a significant announcement this week, followed by a developer conference where the GPT-6 family is expected to make a full-fledged debut. Meanwhile, Anthropic is also stepping up its product development, intensifying the rivalry between the two companies. Whether OpenAI can maintain its lead remains to be seen.
