As voices from tech industry leaders grow louder, urging a deceleration in AI development and advocating for stricter regulatory measures, two AI safety experts from Google DeepMind have tendered their resignations. Their decision stems from apprehensions regarding the potential peril that highly advanced AI systems could pose to humanity. One of the researchers, Josh Engels, perceives the likelihood of AI systems inflicting substantial harm within the forthcoming five years as "startlingly high". He has now aligned himself with METR, an autonomous AI assessment entity, to delve into challenges such as model alignment malfunctions. The other researcher, Bilal Chughtai, echoes these sentiments, emphasizing that the window of opportunity for humanity to effectively manage AI-related risks is rapidly closing.
