A source familiar with the negotiations revealed that the decision to proceed with the funding will depend on the final timing of OpenAI's IPO, and that the discussions were initiated by investors. Such a substantial funding round would pave the way for OpenAI's highly anticipated IPO. Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Fortune magazine that an IPO is still in the works, but will not happen this year. Additionally, this round of funding would position OpenAI's valuation above that of its main competitor, Anthropic, which reached a valuation of $965 billion after completing a funding round in May this year.
