On September 15, 2026, a significant announcement was made by the Earth System Numerical Forecasting Center of the China Meteorological Administration, in collaboration with Sugon. They revealed that China's independently developed meteorological numerical forecasting system, which harnesses the power of the domestically produced AI supercomputer Dawning 8000, has dramatically cut down the computation time required for generating global 10-day weather forecasts with a 5-kilometer resolution. The process, which once took considerable time, can now be completed in just one hour. This breakthrough not only fulfills the timeliness demands essential for operational applications but also positions China at the forefront internationally in this field.
