On September 13, OpenAI founder Altman announced that the company will not pursue a public listing this year, citing the substantial safety-related tasks that remain to be addressed. This decision comes amid heightened concerns over AI safety, triggered by a recent warning from an Anthropic employee who resigned and cautioned about the formidable capabilities of artificial intelligence, raising fears of a potential “apocalyptic scenario.”

Against this backdrop, Altman remarked, “Now is not the right time to go public—certainly not in 2026. There’s still a great deal of work ahead of us.” Previously, market speculation had suggested that both OpenAI and Anthropic might undertake significant initial public offerings (IPOs) this year. However, Altman’s statement has now shifted greater public listing pressure onto Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, particularly after Amodei himself called on Saturday for a slowdown in AI development.
