Recently, a conflict flared up between the mathematical community and leading AI companies. The spark was OpenAI's announcement that it had harnessed around 10,000 Agents to crack the Navier-Stokes equations in just 88 hours. Yet, this feat drew criticism from mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster of New York University and Levent Alpöge of Anthropic, who accused OpenAI of acting prematurely. The two factions clashed over issues such as whether user data was accessed and the right to proper attribution. Following this, 25 Fields Medalists collectively issued an open letter, condemning AI companies for employing problem-solving as a benchmark to gauge model capabilities. They contended that this method veers significantly from the objectives of the mathematical community, potentially jeopardizing the chéngchuán (meaning 'inheritance' or 'continuation') of mathematical research and paving the way for plagiarism in attribution. While they do not stand against AI development, they worry that it might sidestep the process of comprehension and diminish the peripheral benefits of academic research. Previously, AI has made several strides in mathematics, and opinions within the mathematical community have been divided. For instance, Jacob Tsimerman, a Fields Medalist for 2026, has joined OpenAI. Moreover, due to this controversy, the rules for the upcoming Math Hackathon were revised, and OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship.
