On September 11, US media reported that Anthropic discovered a group in northern Yemen utilizing its Claude AI model to develop missile and rocket systems, heightening concerns about the use of advanced AI in military projects and its potential acquisition by non-state actors. In its latest report on AI misuse detection and countermeasures released on Thursday, Anthropic noted that these unidentified actors are advancing three weapons projects, including guided rockets, ballistic missiles with a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles), and a missile series named R2000. The Yemeni group leveraged Claude to develop guidance, navigation, and control software, replacing some of the work typically done by software engineers. These actors dispersed their work across multiple AI sessions, concealing the military nature of the projects to evade detection. Anthropic's announcement comes amid ongoing missile and drone attacks by Iran-backed Houthi forces on shipping in the Red Sea, a crucial global trade route. Recently, the militant group has advanced toward coastal areas of the Red Sea bordering the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, intensifying clashes with Saudi-backed Yemeni forces. As the Iran-related conflict continues to impact energy markets, oil prices have been pushed higher.
