On September 10, according to AXIOS, a Republican-led disaster management subcommittee of the US Senate is launching an investigation into OpenAI regarding the July Hugging Face breach incident. This investigation comes amid growing concerns on Capitol Hill over AI existential risks, following public warnings from several researchers at Anthropic and OpenAI. Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Disaster Management, mentioned in a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman the increasing warnings from AI experts in the public domain about AI existential risks. He specifically pointed out that this week alone, three Anthropic researchers stated that there is a more than 10% probability that AI could lead to the extinction of all humanity within the next decade. Hawley stated that this investigation is a response to the conclusions of OpenAI's recent internal investigation. The Hugging Face breach incident has become a turning point in AI history, prompting OpenAI to slow down its model release pace and driving the entire industry to sound the alarm on AI-driven cyberattacks.
