The 'ASCII Smuggling' technique, which was previously utilized by hackers to launch attacks on AI systems, has now found a new application among spammers seeking to circumvent email platform filtering systems. Microsoft's security team has disclosed that malicious actors are leveraging this method to inundate numerous email accounts with deceptive messages. Earlier in the year, Microsoft observed a notable uptick in spam emails employing this technique within Microsoft Defender for Office. The volume of ASCII smuggling signatures detected in a single day soared from roughly 21,000 to a staggering 1,300,000-plus, further escalating to 2,500,000 within just four days. This surge continued for several months before experiencing a marked decrease by mid-May.
