On September 4, the U.S. Department of Defense clarified that the restrictions imposed on artificial intelligence firm Anthropic are still in place, directly challenging the prior statement made by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick regarding a settlement between the government and the company. Emil Michael, the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, took to a social media platform to announce that Anthropic continues to be classified as a 'supply chain risk' by both the Department of Defense and the broader defense industrial sector. Lutnick had previously announced that Anthropic had settled its longstanding disputes with the Trump administration, suggesting an improvement in the company's ties with the government. Anthropic had initially come under scrutiny due to fears within the government that its AI models could potentially be exploited to bolster cyberattack capabilities.
