According to Business Insider, the New York City public school system has announced that starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, the use of generative AI in classrooms by elementary and middle school students will be suspended for one year. This policy will affect approximately 600,000 students, accounting for two-thirds of the total number of students in the city's public schools. High school students will not face a blanket restriction, but they will only be allowed to use approved AI tools in specific teaching scenarios.
