The desktop applications for OpenAI's ChatGPT and Codex have been found to bundle multiple large open-source tools, including a complete copy of LibreOffice (430MB), Python (440MB), Node.js (446MB), Poppler (188MB), and git (148MB). These files are located within the codex-primary-runtime folder and collectively occupy several GBs of space. Previously, Anthropic's Claude desktop app was also found to bundle a 10GB virtual machine. These discoveries indicate that AI applications are shifting from relying on external APIs to carrying their own complete toolchains to meet the needs of AI Agents operating on real files.
