For the first time, the South Korean government is set to directly acquire graphics processing unit (GPU) services from external private artificial intelligence data centers (AIDC). Historically, public infrastructure policies in South Korea have long adhered to a closed approach, primarily due to security concerns. However, this new development represents a significant policy shift, as the government aims to bolster the nation's competitiveness in the AI sector. Specifically, the Daegu Center of the National Information Resources Management Institute, operating under the auspices of South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety, will establish a dedicated connection to the GPU services available at Samsung SDS's Dongtan Data Center. This connection will enable the center to access high-performance AI computing resources, marking a notable advancement in the government's approach to leveraging private sector capabilities for public benefit.
